STEM Playbook Launches Innovative Sports-Based STEM Program at Northeast Ohio Boys & Girls Clubs

CLEVELAND - STEM Playbook announces a six-week pilot program bringing hands-on STEM education through sports to four Boys & Girls Clubs across Northeast Ohio. The program launched in January 2025 at two Akron and two Cleveland locations.

The curriculum integrates physics, engineering, mathematics and data analytics into athletic activities, making STEM education engaging and relevant for youth participants. Initial sessions saw strong engagement, with students already reporting that they are now more interested in STEM disciplines.

"Traditional STEM education often struggles to connect with students," says Katie Grotegooed, STEM Playbook’s president. "By integrating these concepts into sports, we're meeting students where their interests already lie."

Students play basketball, football, hockey, soccer and other sports while working their way through standards-aligned curriculum.

The program operates at:

  • Boys & Girls Club of NEO - LeBron James Club, 825 Fuller St., Akron

  • Boys & Girls Club of NEO - Helen Arnold, 450 Vernon-Odom Blvd,  Akron

  • Boys & Girls Club of NEO - St. Luke’s - 2705 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Cleveland

  • Boys & Girls Club of NEO - Broadway - 6114 Broadway Ave., Cleveland
